Alan Armstrong Program Coordinator

Mr. Armstrong is in his 29th year of music education in the public school systems of Alabama and Georgia.  He currently is in his 21st year as the Director at Northgate High School in Newnan Georgia where he opened the school in 1996.  His bands consistently receive superior ratings and championship honors in concert, marching and jazz events.  The Northgate program was one of the first three high schools recognized with the Georgia Music Educators Association Exemplary Performance Award for excellence in all facets of music education.  His top wind ensemble at Northgate has performed for the Georgia State Leadership Convention, performed for  Ambassadors from Gifu, Japan and has been one of the featured guest bands at the University of Alabama Honor Band Clinic.  His marching bands have appeared in the Alabama Governors Inaugural Parade and holiday parades in San Francisco, Washington DC,  Chicago, IL, New York City and Hollywood, CA. Mr. Armstrong has enjoyed an extensive career in the Drum and Bugle Corps activity over the last 35 years.  He began his career as a performer with the Spirit of Atlanta where he later served on staff for 15 years in roles from brass technician to Brass Caption Head and arranging consultant. The 2016 season saw him return as a consultant for the organization, a role he will reprise in 2017.  He was named the founding Program and Instructional Coordinator for the Court of Honor Drum and Bugle Corps in 2003 and guided the corps to a fourth place finish in Division III and an undefeated season in brass in only their second year of existence.  He served as the Brass Caption Head for the Memphis Sound in 2005 before moving into judging for DCI from 2006 through 2011. In 2008 and 2009, he served as the visual caption head for Atlanta CV.  In 2010, he took over the as the Brass Caption Head for the corps.  In 2012, he added responsibilities as the staff coordinator for the corps and in 2015 took over show coordination for the corps as well.   Since 2012, the corps has enjoyed the most competitive seasons in their history including record high scores and most recently two consecutive top six placements at the DCA World Championships. In addition to his work with Atlanta CV,  he will return for his fourth season as a member of the brass staff for the Cavaliers this summer as well, serving as an ensemble specialist with the corps. He is active as a clinician, consultant, composer and arranger for marching bands, concert bands and drum corps in the United States as well as Japan. In addition to judging for DCI, he has served as an adjudicator for band circuits nationwide.  He also regularly presents leadership seminars for band programs throughout the region.  He is a member of National Association for Music Educators, National Band Association, Georgia Music Educators Association, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia and Phi Beta Mu.  He lives in Newnan with his wife Ginger and they are the proud parents of Caitlin, Kelsey, Emily and Ryan (all “drumcorps/winterguard kids” themselves).
